Off the beaten path – luxury where you least expect it.

When you think of a spa hotel in Manhattan, images of the Upper East Side or SoHo are what tend to spring to mind. However, if you are looking to retreat and enjoy the more colourful neighbourhoods of the city, these options are perfect for you.

A spa hotel on NYC’s Lower East Side

Manhattan’s Lower East Side is fast becoming the go-to area for cool, boutique hotels. Sixty Lower East Side Hotel, is right in the centre of this quirky neighbourhood, plus it has a myriad of amenities including a rooftop pool, a sushi restaurant and a great spa.

The hotel is surrounded by some cool museums, such as The Tenement and The New Museum and is only a short walk from Eric’s favourite area: East Village. Head to St. Marks Place for alternative shops and a lively music scene.

Whilst not the best-looking building from the outside (the sixties have a lot to answer for when it comes to architecture) don’t judge a book by its cover. On the inside, the hotel does not fail to impress, with just the right combination of luxury and cool to suit the grit and modernity of the area.

The individually decorated guest rooms are well-appointed with hardwood floors and antique-style beds, armoires and beautifully tiled bathrooms, all giving your stay an old-world ambience. The lobby bar and the sitting room is cozy yet grand, a perfect spot to enjoy a drink after a long day of sightseeing.

Take the lift down to the Shibu Spa in the hotel’s basement and be immediately transported to a Japanese onsen. Take a dip in the heated pool, put on your robe and relax in the lounge area, or indulge in a treatment. Revive your tired muscles with a stress relieving massage and allow the essential oils to do their work before continuing your evening in the vibrant neighbourhood.
