Friuli Venezia Giulia

A nature lover’s guide to Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia

A nature lover's paradise, the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia will tempt you for your next visit with our guide on where to go, what to eat and where to stay.

Friuli Venezia Giulia – or FVG – is a region of Italy tucked between Slovenia and Austria. When I went, I found it to be an intriguing melting pot of all three countries. FVG’s a haven for outdoors types – it’s got everything from the towering Dolomites to steep vineyard valleys.

You can stretch your legs with a gentle walk or push your limits with a long-distance bike ride. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, tuck into the region’s hearty specialities, from fresh pasta and seafood to succulent pork.

Where to stay in FVG

Whether you want to stay near the water or feel the energy of the city centre, there is a plethora of accommodation options available.

A classic Trieste stay with sea views

1/3

Back in Trieste, rest tired feet at the refined Grand Hotel Duchi D’Aosta. I always stay here because it’s right in the middle of the Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste’s main square, with views of the sparkling sea beyond. Have a steam in the luxurious Turkish bath – trust me, your muscles will thank you.

A beachside retreat

1/3

If you like to splash out and love staying right by the beach, try the elegant Hotel Miramare. Balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows let the breeze come flowing in, and you can watch the sunset with a cocktail from the seafront terrace. I love the powerful showers in the marble bathrooms – bliss after a long day of exploring.

A touch of modernity

1/3

To be close to the action in the centre of Trieste, the NH Trieste could be your ideal home away from home. Sleek and sophisticated – think cool, muted grey tones and tactile textures – it brings a touch of modern style to your getaway in FVG. You’ll also be minutes away from some of Trieste’s must-sees, such as the Piazza Unità d’Italia and San Giusto Castle.

A boutique stay for your FVG getaway

1/2

If you’re looking to stay around the Gemona area, check out the Pittini Hotel. With only 16 guest spaces, it has a private, boutique feel. Modern rooms are cosy and relaxing, with sumptuous beds and sweeping views of the Prealps. I’d recommend the breakfast of flaky pastries, fresh bread and cold cuts to set you up for the day.

Where – and what – to eat after your day outdoors

1/3

The cuisine of FVG is fresh, yet indulgent: think fluffy polenta cooked with creamy cheese, or sweet and savoury ravioli packed full of cinnamon, potato and raisins.
