Amsterdam for couples: hotels for an extra special romantic weekend

After a disastrous hotel stay in Amsterdam, trivago magazine's Anne picks out some wonderfully romantic hotels to make sure the same won't happen to you on your weekend away!

Admittedly, when you think of a weekend in Amsterdam, romance probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But when I went to test the Dutch capital’s suitability for a romantic stay, I found that Amsterdam definitely has a romantic side. Think beautiful canals, romantic parks with endless lawns, great restaurants and pretty streets for strolling.

There was just one thing that wasn’t quite right during my short stay in Amsterdam, and that was the hotel. As my weekend trip was a spontaneous decision, my only option was a grey hotel with sad remnants of a soggy breakfast buffet and drunk people trying to break down the door at night. But what annoyed me the most were the separate and worn-out mattresses. That’s not what you need on a couple’s weekend away!

To make sure the same doesn’t happen to you, I’ve picked some wonderful hotels for you that will make your weekend for two in Amsterdam perfect.

★★★★ The Toren | Romantic hotel with in-room jacuzzi

A romantic hotel room doesn’t get any better than having a privatel in-room jacuzzi. The suites and deluxe rooms of the four-star hotel The Toren all have their own jacuzzi. Dimmed lights, a cosy king size bed and velvet furnishings invite you to spend hours cuddling in your hotel room. In the evening, head to the sophisticated bar, which further enhances the mystic atmosphere of the boutique hotel, and sample the champagne and cocktail selection. The hotel is situated in the canal belt and is therefore very centrally located. So right after breakfast you can set out to explore the romantic streets of Amsterdam.

★★★★ Hotel Roemer | Small four-star hotel in a quiet central location

Hotel Roemer also knows what couples love – that’s why this hotel’s Junior Suite and Executive rooms also boast their own jacuzzi. The hotel has only 23 rooms in total, making it ideal for a private couple’s holiday. You can be sure that there won’t be any drunken party-goers trying to kick in your door at night. Thanks to the quiet side street location of the Leidseplein, you can sleep in as long as you like in the morning. But before you get up and start your day, first enjoy a hot coffee in bed, courtesy of the Nespresso machine in your room.

★★★ Sebastian’s | Designer boutique hotel on the romantic Keizersgracht

The three-star boutique hotel Sebastian’s sits on the picturesque Keizersgracht canal. Warm, bold colours and exquisite fabrics add luxury and elegance to the entire hotel and to the rooms. Have a lie-in in your king size bed before drifting along the bustling lanes of the nearby Haarlemmerstraat or exploring the Nine Streets neighbourhood with its amazing designer shops. The hip Jordaan district will entice you with its romantic backyards – and you’ll most certainly need your credit card in its many trendy shops!

After that, refresh with a meal in one of the popular restaurants before heading back to the hotel bar to see out the day. If you prefer to explore Amsterdam by bike, rent a bicycle at the hotel and you’ll be ready to join the action. I discovered that cycling in Amsterdam is quite an experience in itself. Here’s my top survival tip: never stop in the middle of the bike path!

1/4

The bathrooms have a rain shower and are quipped with quality toiletries. Perfect for getting back into shape after a night of drinking.
